In this episode I sat down to talk with Dave Dahl, owner of Dave's Killer Bread, and former drug addict with a combined history of 15 years in prison for crimes ranging from burglary and robbery, to delivery of a controlled substance. When he was released, he returned to his parent's bakery and developed a recipe for whole-grain organic bread that not only changed the course of the bakery business, but also his life and by extension, the life of other rehabilitating convicts as well.
Phil Britten, known as the Worlds Leading Innovation Expert, lost his chance as a professional Australian Football player when he injured himself while playing the sport. After dropping out of school, becoming an HVAC technician, and studying martial arts, he hesitantly re-entered the football arena.
In 2002, Phil was approached by a semi-professional scout. While on a trip to Bali with his buddies, he found himself in a nightclub where his whole world changed. Terrorists bombed the nightclub he was in, and after barely surviving, and with burns over 60% of his body, he fought his way back to health, and then returned to the football field just 6 months later.
He built 6 businesses from the ground up, become an international speaker, and an Ambassador for childhood cancer.
From falling into one of the darkest moments his life had to offer, Phil’s determination has seen his star rapidly rise once more. Faced with the choice between being a victim or a survivor, he instead redefined the model of ‘do whatever it takes’, and chose to become a warrior.
In this episode of Strength Through The Struggle, I had the opportunity to sit down with Alex Charfen, co-founder and CEO of Charfen. Alex struggled through his childhood and into his adolescence, feeling at odds through the world outside of his family, unable to focus or succeed in school and often at odds with his peers.
At the age of eight, through the loss of his family’s business, Alex began working, and quickly began equating success and equalizing in the world with money and the value of earning. He became a top-name consultant in sales and marketing, performing with excellence.
After sales, losses and gains, Alex and his wife Cadey have created Charfen. Today, the company has emerged as a leading training and business consulting organization for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
In this episode I had the opportunity to talk with Ryan Michler, husband, father, Iraqi Combat Veteran, and the Founder of Order of Man, about the challenges of his childhood and the effects of growing up without a strong father figure. Ryan shared with me the struggles he experienced in his adult life as a result of this, the realizations he had, and ultimately how he has overcome it.
Ryan now uses his experiences to help other men in his same situation as well as men who just want to be better men.
